I have just been given the chance to review a digital copy of Vegetarian Times (US version), with my subscription provided courtesy of Zinio USA, a digital magazine subscription service. And even better, Zinio have offered me 8 subscriptions of Vegetarian Times to giveaway to lucky readers of Chocolate and Beyond!
I currently have the December issue of Vegetarian Times, and it is packed with - as far as I can tell - mostly vegan recipes. This is good news :) Especially, I like the fact that I notice some well-known vegan names on the editorial and staff of the magazine, including Ann Gentry as executive chef - the person who came up with the wonderful cashew cheese I always rave about, and who owns the Real Food Daily restaurant.
I especially like this December seasonal issue, as with Christmas around the corner, I've been searching for some really excellent recipes to enjoy for our Christmas dinner - and there is a recipe feature on five different things to do with Brussels sprouts, other than just boil them! (I normally steam then char in coconut oil in the frying pan). Some of the sprout recipes would need to be veganised though.
There is an amazing recipe for a holiday gravy which involves potatoes, although I am still undecided as to whether I am going to make a sweeter, red wine type of gravy this year.
I like the tamales article too, for something a little different. I have never tried making tamales and actually didn't even know what they were until recently, so I was happy to see this feature devoted to them, mostly vegan recipes with just a couple that could easily be veganised. And there are loads of fabulous sweet treats recipes too.
Vegetarian Times doesn't just focus on food and recipes, but health and animal issues too. Some of the articles focus on one food as a 'healing food' or with ways to use that food. Also, on the health side of things, Dr Neal Barnard, president of PCRM, has a column in the magazine called 'Ask the Doc'. Though it strikes me as odd that any magazine which includes a spread about animal charities, featuring farmed animal sanctuaries in particular, also promotes the cruelty of dairy products in some of its recipes.
Even if the magazine was afraid to call itself 'Vegan Times' (I know negative perceptions on veganism mean people don't want to embrace the word), it could still resolve to only publish vegan recipes and be consistent with an anti-cruelty message - otherwise, it sends a confusing message. The fact is, there is no such thing as 'ethical vegetarianism', just as there is no such thing as 'ethical meat-eating'. Cruelty and exploitation are involved always.
But - as far as recipes go, the magazine does have many great vegan ones as I mentioned, and the ones that aren't, seem to be fairly easy to veganise. So while there is little else choice for vegans in the form of a mainstream foodie magazines, I would recommend Vegetarian Times.
Using Zinio
In regard to using Zinio as a digital reader and subscription service, it seems pretty easy to get to grips with. Easy to page turn, zoom, and generally the magazine is very readable.
You can download your magazine so that you can access it when offline, and also there is a Zinio app which enables you to get your magazine subscription on your smartphone. This means it would make it easier to follow recipes in your kitchen. Obviously the lesser portablility is one of the drawbacks of having a digital copy of a food magazine over a paper one.
If you don't have a smartphone or don't want to get your phone or laptop covered in bits of food as you cook, there is a page print option so favourite recipes could be printed out.
And subscribing digitally to magazines means paper-saving and better for the environment, as well as space-saving - you can store your mags for future use, without cluttering your home too much.

Wonderful! I 'liked' C&B ages ago because it's brilliant. When you say leave your address - I'd rather not leave my postal address on a comment section that people can see, if that's OK, but I can provide it very easily if necessary. Best wishes. x
