It's been a few months since I began to severely restrict carbohydrates and sugar in my diet in order to ease off the yeast problems I was having, and I have to admit, I didn't always 'stick to the rules' (because after all, who needs rules? They drive you crazy).
The sinus symptoms I used to have though have been pretty clear for a good 2-3 months - it is quite amazing how diet can have such a profound effect on your life. Obviously, something must have been out of balance for some time - probably the fact that I had spent so many years eating a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet in order to control weight (low-fat, high carb diets are very linked to initiating candida problems).
Anyhow, I felt it might be time to slowly reintroduce some of the nutritional and enjoyable foods that my diet has been missing. Namely, complex carbohydrates with a low glycaemic index, so they don't have too much impact on my blood sugar and give the candida a big feast again.
I decided to begin with porridge oats, because I miss having them for breakfast with nuts, cinnamon and dried fruit, and have had three oaty breakfasts this week so far. The remainder of my meals in the day are still keeping carbohydrates to a minimum because I don't want to trigger my sinus problem, after all the hard work I've done to relieve it.
But I'm not planning to switch into low-fat mode again - that has gone for good. I actually tell people now that I "don't do low-fat" and it feels so much better than asking if there is skimmed milk available!
